"A heartbeat found her in the darkness."
Wow. That's basically the first word that comes to mind after finishing Alexandra Bracken's newest book, LORE. This might be the last book that I finish in 2020, and it was honestly one of the best. Action-packed, heart felt, intense, romantic, a modern take on Greek mythology, female warriors, disastrous gods...this book has everything and more. It'll be releasing in January, so it's the perfect book to kick off 2021 with!
Lore is the story of Lore, the last of her bloodline the Perseides. Lore is done living in the world of hunters and warriors, of old gods and new gods, of a life without decisions. But it's been seven years now since her entire family was murdered, and the Agon is back--the 7 day period when all the bloodlines hunt the gods to ascend and become new gods. Fate is pulling Lore back into the world she despises. Fate, plus one of the last original goddesses, Athena.
I've read a lot of good books this year, but this one is going to stand out among the best. Bracken has created a masterful story of a modern take on greek mythology in New York. She's created complex, compelling characters, who are grey, not black and white. I love Lore's rage, her sense of justice and her loyalty to her friends. I love that we don't really know who/what Athena is, even though we think we do, even before reading. And I love that Lore is the physically stronger half of her romantic relationship, and yet they are still equals in the relationship.
The writing is flawless, seamless. Each exciting action scene blends perfectly into the emotional, thought provoking scenes of what Bloodline culture and the Agon really means to Lore. LORE releases in January. It'll make the best read to kick off 2021. I've loved Bracken's previous work, but this one has really just hit it right out of the park. Lore is a story of decisions, of family and loyalty. Basically, Lore is impeccable. Read it, and you won't regret it!
